The trade screen usually gives you a single sentence descriptor of the merchants disposition such as "he is very willing to trade" or something similiar.
The skill of your broker greatly effects this as well so make sure your broker isn't some sort of antisocial psychotic with extremely poor social skills and no appraisal ability. I don't know if there is an upper limit to how bad this can get but I don't think I have ever seen a merchant turn down an offer that makes him over 100% profit. Give the guy a 200% profit margin in a test trade like this and if he still turns it down then you know something is up.Īs a good rule of thumb it helps to butter up a trader with a couple of very low value trades where he has a huge profit margin before you try to strike a bargain with him for the bulk of the goods you want.Įach time you offend the merchant by offering him a trade that he doesn't want his disposition towards you will become more negative and the larger the profit margin he will demand in order to agree to a trade. For instance try trading him some cut gems for just about anything else of a significantly lower value.
The gift will improve his sour disposition towards you for the earlier failed trade offers and if you still get a refusal then it points to his carrying capacity being the source of the problem.Īnother way you could test if weight is the issue would be to offer him valuable but small items in return for items you want from him that weigh more and are worth a lot less. Offering him a trade he doesn't like will make him less friendly towards you where as offering him a trade where he makes a crazy profit margin will make him much more receptive to future trading at a lower profit margin. The friendlier his disposition is towards you the smaller the profit margin he will accept. I'm not sure if this is the only problem, but the trader always wants to make a significant profit.
It just wasn't profitable enough for his tastes. The part where he says he won't trade at a loss typically means that he didn't like the deal you offered him. Merchants can arrive without cart access as you have seen but it means they only have pack animals who can carry much less weight than the carts. I used the option, and the ENTIRE MAP was covered in No Wagon Access red X's, except for a 4x4 square next to my depot that says Wagon Access, and another 4x4 square that mostly covers my depot that is marked Inaccessible Depot. Instead, it revealed that the merchants shouldn't have been able to get to the depot at all. I saw the "D Depot access" button on the menu and thought it might help. What's going on?Įdit: Okay, now I'm confused that the merchants even got to the depot. I've gotten trade goods to the depot, I can get into the trade interface, but when it says there's still 'available weight' and I try to trade, the merchant says the topic title, and when it says 'excess weight,' he says that he won't trade at a loss.
I've recently gotten into dwarf fortress (though the learning curve doesn't seem quite as steep as people insinuate), and so far I've figured out things without too much trouble.
